SHORTSJET EDITING GUIDES

How to turn a longer video into a Short

Begin with the original recording rather than a compressed copy of a published upload. Your task is to find one complete idea, then rebuild its opening and composition for someone who has not seen the full video.

Use three questions to choose a passage

Watch the source and note possible sections before making a detailed edit. A useful candidate answers a specific question, demonstrates a result or shows an understandable reaction. Judge the passage on its own, not on how memorable it felt inside the longer video.

  • Can a new viewer identify the topic in the opening sentence or image?
  • Does the passage deliver a useful result without another chapter of context?
  • Can the section end naturally without removing an important condition or qualification?

Make a clean cut before rebuilding the frame

Import the recording into ShortsJet, split around the passage and remove the surrounding material from the new edit. Trim incomplete words or references to earlier sections. If the explanation needs a short introduction, add a title or record a concise voiceover.

Set the project to 9:16 and inspect the source shot by shot. Reposition the subject for the vertical canvas. If a wide screen recording includes two distant panels, show the relevant panel at each point rather than squeezing the whole desktop into a tiny strip.

Review it as a standalone video

Generate captions after the new speech sequence is settled. Check pronouns and references such as “this one” against the picture: the original video may have introduced an object that is no longer visible in your Short.

Watch the export without returning to the source. If the opening feels abrupt, add context; if the ending leaves the promised question unanswered, choose a better passage. Repurposing is a fresh edit, not just shortening the runtime.

Turn the selected passage into an MP4

  1. Isolate one idea

Import the original file, mark the complete beginning and ending, then split and trim the new sequence.

  2. Set a vertical composition

Choose 9:16 and adjust the crop for each shot. Check movement near the edges of the frame.

  3. Restore context

Add a short title or narration only where the new viewer needs it, then caption the final speech.

  4. Check meaning and playback

Compare the message with the source, export and review the MP4 as a complete standalone video.

Frequently asked questions

Can ShortsJet pick the best section automatically?

You choose the section manually. ShortsJet provides the timeline, framing, captions and effects used to turn it into a finished short.

Should I use the downloaded social upload as my source?

Prefer the original recording when you have it. It avoids starting from a version that may already have been compressed or contain platform overlays.
