SHORTSJET EDITING GUIDES
YouTube Shorts resolution: a practical guide to 1080 × 1920
For a full-height vertical Short, 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high is a practical editing canvas. The order matters: 1920 × 1080 is landscape. Resolution describes pixel dimensions; aspect ratio describes the shape.
- Width comes first
- 1080 × 1920 is 9:16
- Source detail still matters
Read video dimensions in the right order
Video dimensions are normally written as width × height. Reversing the numbers changes the orientation of the canvas. ShortsJet offers a vertical 1080 × 1920 project and a landscape 1920 × 1080 project.
| Dimensions | Shape | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 vertical | ShortsJet vertical project for a phone-shaped video |
| 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 landscape | ShortsJet landscape project for a wider presentation |
| 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 square | Square format reference; not a ShortsJet project preset |
Separate an editing choice from Shorts eligibility
YouTube currently describes qualifying new Shorts as square or vertical videos up to three minutes. Choosing 1080 × 1920 gives you a 9:16 vertical canvas; those exact pixel dimensions are not the definition of a Short.
Use the current YouTube guidance when checking upload eligibility. Use the resolution decision to control how much detail you are working with and the shape of the exported picture.
Why a 1080p vertical video can still look soft
An output size does not guarantee that the source contains that much detail. A 1920 × 1080 landscape recording cropped to 9:16 retains only about 608 pixels of width if you keep its full height. Enlarging that crop to 1080 × 1920 stretches the retained detail across more pixels.
Heavy punch zooms, already compressed recordings and tiny interface text can make the problem more noticeable. Prefer a closer or higher-detail source, use a gentler crop and compare the exported file with the editor preview. Repeatedly downloading and re-exporting a social upload gives you a weaker source than the original recording.
Check the resolution of your ShortsJet edit
Set the vertical format
Choose 9:16 from Format above the preview or in project properties. Confirm that the composition is tall rather than wide.
Inspect the source at the final crop
Check a face, fine text and any zoomed detail. Reduce enlargement or replace a soft source when the important detail is not readable.
Verify the MP4
Export and inspect the file dimensions in a media player or file properties. Watch the video at phone size and inspect the processed upload as a separate final check.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1920 × 1080 vertical?
No. It is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high, which is landscape. The vertical counterpart is 1080 × 1920.
Does a 1080p export fix a low-resolution source?
No. It sets the output dimensions but cannot recreate missing source detail. Strong cropping or zooming can make softness more visible.
Does ShortsJet export a 4K project?
The documented project formats are vertical 1080 × 1920 and landscape 1920 × 1080. Choose one of those 1080p formats for this workflow.
