EXPLAIN IT IN YOUR OWN VOICE
Record and edit a voiceover in your video project
A product demo or screen recording may show the right action without explaining it. ShortsJet lets you record your microphone while the picture plays, then edit the take alongside the footage, music and captions.
- Record against playback
- Trim the audio take
- Caption your narration
Follow the picture as you speak
Recording after the main cut lets you describe the actual sequence. Place the playhead where the explanation should begin and start microphone recording on an audio track. Seeing the action helps you time phrases to a click, movement or reveal.
Keep your script close to spoken language. A short direct sentence is easier to fit around a clear action than a paragraph of background. If the demonstration needs more time, adjust the picture rather than racing through the words.
Treat narration as an editable part of the story
The recorded take appears as an audio clip with a waveform. Trim the lead-in, move the take if its opening is late and adjust its volume. You can rerecord a short explanation without capturing the entire screen demonstration again.
Use headphones during recording to reduce playback leaking into the microphone. Check the operating system microphone selection and permissions before the real take, then make a short test to confirm the level and sound.
Keep the voice clear through the final export
Music should support the voice instead of masking it. Adjust clip volume and fades, listen to the narration alone when diagnosing a problem and then check the complete mix. A loud effect at the beginning can hide the most important introductory word.
Generate captions from the narration clip or audible timeline mix once the take is settled. Review the text and timing, then export the video with the corrected captions visible in the picture.

How to add a microphone voiceover
Prepare the picture and microphone
Finish the rough cut, choose your system microphone and record a short test in a quiet space.
Record with the timeline
Move the playhead to the narration start and use the red record control on an audio track. Speak while playback follows the edit.
Trim, mix and caption
Stop recording, refine the audio clip and check it against music. Generate captions from the final speech and export.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add narration after the footage is edited?
Yes. Record a voiceover on an audio layer from the playhead position while the edited video plays.
Can I edit a recorded take?
Yes. The recording becomes an audio clip that you can trim, move and adjust with volume and fades.
Is microphone recording the same as text to speech?
No. Voiceover recording captures your own microphone. ShortsJet also has a separate Text to Speech feature for generating narration from a script.
